Description:
Wild yam's medicinal benefits have long been recognized by herbalists and pharmaceutists. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was used to treat menstrual cramps and problems related to childbirth. The subsequent discovery of a substance contained in wild yams revolutionized the pharmaceutical industry. The tubers, or fleshy, rootlike parts, of wild yams (not to be confused with the sweet potato yam) contain diosgenin, a steroid-like substance that can be converted into the female hormone progesterone.
Function:
1、Genitary Disorders
The steroidal saponins (such as diosgenin) account for some of the activity of wild yam. It is used for a wide range of ailments including many female problems and to relieve the pain of child birth. Researches indicate that this is a powerful herb containing many steroidal saponins, mainly dioscin which is used to manufacture progesterone and other steroid drugs used as contraceptives and in the treatment of various disorders of the genitary organs. Besides, an extract of the root is used to alleviate many of the symptoms of menopause and PMS such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and vaginal dryness.
2、Antispasmodic and etc.
Other constituents in wild yam such as phytosterols (beta-sitosterol), alkaloids and tannins make it useful as an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, cholagogue, diaphoretic and vasodilator. So it is also helpful in other diseases such as asthma, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, gall bladder complaints, spasmodic cramps, painful menstruation, and in small doses is especially helpful in treating the nausea of pregnant women.
Another compound, dioscoretine, has been shown in animal studies to lower blood sugar levels.2 An extract of wild yam was also found in a clinical trial to have antioxidant properties and raised HDL, the “good,” cholesterol in elderly adults.
Chemistry
The wild yam extract is standardized to 16% Diosgenin(C27O3H42).
Dosage
A daily dosage of 1000-1400mg is recommended in three times for menopausal symptoms and PMS.
Safety
Generally there are no severe side effects reported about diosgenin, however, more researches needed to determine its safety when overdosing.
